Remember that you will be competing with other work-from-home freelancers and business owners – and there are thousands of them.  If you don’t like what you do or aren’t good at it, you can’t stand out.  If you can’t stand out, you can’t compete.  If you can’t compete, you can’t earn.

Be prepared to put in a lot of hours

One of the most common misconceptions about work from home jobs is that there’s no need to work long hours to get good pay.  This may be true in some cases but if you’re just starting out, you’ll find that you might also need to work full-time.  In fact, you might notice that you’ll have to put in the same number of hours you did when you worked from a traditional job site.

Personal phone calls, cooking, groceries, trips to the doctor or vet, cleaning, running urgent errands and of course, the family and friends who will drop by to say hello can prove a bit of a challenge to manage.

Many people still think that just because you’re working from home that you can take time off any time you like.  What they don’t realize is that within that space you designated as your home office, there is real work to be done.  Learn to handle these distractions and use your time wisely.  Otherwise, you could end up spending more time doing something unproductive and less time completing your projects.

Learn to manage your money wisely

Yes, there are work-from-home individuals who have reached financial success.  Indeed, it is quite possible to be able to work from the comfort of your own home and earn well.  However, it’s not true of everyone, especially not during the initial phase.

Correct financial management is critical to ensuring your survival and success as a work-from-home person.  Learn to save and spend well so there’s enough money for overhead expenses, necessities, equipment, supplies, advertising and of course, Social Security contributions and your all-important nest egg – retirement, emergency fund, etc.

If you can’t handle money well, you’ll constantly find yourself in a bind, worrying about where to find the next project and where to get much-needed cash.  Worse, you might find yourself taking on projects that don’t reward you well, sacrificing your skills and talent just so you could get a hold of a paycheck.  However, if you can handle your financial work-from-home responsibilities, money troubles should not be a concern for you.
